Incorrect pagination can also make search engine indexing more difficult, which is detrimental to your storeâs SEO.Letâs see why.â How category pagination affects SEO in eCommerceMore precisely, âwhy does incorrect pagination negatively affect your siteâs indexation and generate duplicate contentâ?Indexation is the process whereby crawler bots, such as Googleâs, analyze your website and scan through the content of the different categories and product cards to include them in the search results.But what if youâve neglected your pagination?To put it simply, Googleâs bot may end up indexing the same product two, three, or even ten times!Or it may notice the title and meta description of the same category page several times, thinking they belong to different URLs.All this generates duplicate content, which can hinder your siteâs positioning.So youâd better avoid this, donât you think? đđ The most common pagination strategies and how to make them SEOâfriendlyAs we said earlier, there are two main pagination mechanisms, classic and infinite scrolling.Letâs see how to optimize them both for SEO.â 1. Classic paginationLike we said, itâs about dividing your products into different categories and adding navigation links so users can move around them.This is how Makariâs âskincareâ category works.âĄď¸ How to optimize classic pagination for SEOIn classic pagination, each of the pages in a category has an independent URL.Thus, this is what Makariâs URLs look like:makari.com/skincare?p=1makari.com/skincare?p=2makari.com/skincare?p=3And we are sure you can guess what page fourâs URL would be.Fortunately, avoiding duplicate content is fairly easy here. There are two things you must do:Use different titles and meta descriptions: Since they belong to different URLs, they canât have the same snippet. The easiest way is to add the category name followed by the page number to the title. For example, âSkincare products â page 2â.Use self-referencing canonical URLs: The attribute of canonical URL is typically used when there are two or more pages with highly similar content, and it tells Google which URL is canonical and which ones can be ignored. In this case, though, each page must have a self-referencing canonical URL. Thus, the attribute of Makariâs number 1 page within the âskincareâ category should read as follows: rel=âcanonicalâ href=âhttps://makari.com/skincare?p=1â and so forth. This will prevent incorrect indexation by Google.Plus â even though this has nothing to do with SEO â donât forget to make the navigation buttons flashy so users can find them easily.â 2. Infinite scrolling in eCommerceInfinite scrolling may refer to two different pagination models.On the one hand, we find category pages where products are automatically displayed as users scroll down.On the other, we find shops with a âShow more productsâ button, which allows users to control the product cards that are loaded.Both are the same in terms of SEO.Big eâcommerce shops prefer this method as some categories comprise so many product cards that classic pagination would require tens of pages (which would make navigation harder).The downside is that this system makes it harder to avoid duplicate content.âĄď¸ How to optimize infinite scrolling for SEOIf infinite scrolling is implemented into your online store, users feel like theyâre on the same category page the whole time.Unfortunately, Googleâs bot feels otherwise.Without proper configuration, every time another batch of product cards is loaded, the bot thinks theyâre different pages.In other words, the bot sees them as different pages containing the product cards just loaded and the ones loaded before them, as you can see in this example below on the right.What can you do to prevent this?The key is to group products in different URLs.For example, the URL of the first ten products would be â/categoryname?p=1â, from number 11 to 20 itâd be â/categoryname?p=2â, and so forth.Users wonât notice theyâre on different URLs because theyâll only have to keep scrolling down, but this will avoid duplicate content in the eyes of Googleâs bot.Hereâs a graphical representation:This is a highly technical solution â it requires codeâlevel configuration, so make sure it gets implemented by a website programmer.These images taken from a post by Google for webmasters show how infinite scrolling can affect your SEO and what to do to avoid duplicate content.đ Other common pagination errors affecting the SEO of your eâcommerceSo far, weâve seen how to optimize your siteâs categories according to your pagination system.But it doesnât end there.There are other pagination errors that can hinder indexation and, therefore, positioning.Letâs see each of them separately.â 1. Indexing filter/See all pagesIf you have categories comprising lots of product cards, you should make sure navigation flows as smoothly as possible.Thatâs why many eâcommerce stores have:Included search filters: brand, price, size, color, etc.A âSee allâ option: so users can choose how many products per page (5, 10, 20) they wish to see in classic pagination â and even choose to see them all at once.The problem is that these options all require exclusive URLs.For example, if you sell trainers and decide to add a brand filter, the URL could look like this: âyourdomain.com/trainers=?brand=nikeâ.So what happens when these URLs are indexed by Google?Thatâs right: duplicate content again.Thatâs why itâs crucial to deny search robots access to these URLs.â 2. Denying access to secondary result pagesTo avoid duplicate pages, some eâcommerce shops have decided to stop Googleâs bot from indexing secondary pages.For instance, if a category contains seven URLs, they only index the first one and deny access to the other six pages (or set the first page as canonical URL).We donât recommend this, however, since each one of these pages contains different product cards that could position for different keywords.So the cure is worse than the disease.â 3.
