The truth is, it’s really only a few months away and it always seems to sneak up on us every year.
But don’t worry – I’ve prepared everything you’d need to get your store ready for Black Friday 2024.
When is Black Friday 2024?
Black Friday 2024 is on Friday, November 29, 2024. This is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, which always falls on the fourth Friday in November.
What is Black Friday 2024?
If you’re an eCommerce manager, I’m sure you already know what Black Friday is, but let’s give a quick explanation for those of you that might not know, especially if you’re new to eCommerce.
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S., marking the start of the Christmas shopping season. It’s known for huge sales and discounts, drawing many shoppers to stores.
Even though it’s not an official holiday, many people have the day off, creating a long weekend.
This day often sees the highest retail sales of the year and is a major event for both shoppers and retailers, with special deals and limited-time offers.
Black Friday History
Black Friday began in the 1950s and 1960s as retailers noticed a surge in shopping the day after Thanksgiving.
Initially, the term “Black Friday” had a negative meaning, referring to the hectic crowds and traffic.
By the 1980s, it was rebranded to highlight its positive impact on retail sales, with “black” symbolizing profitability.
Today, Black Friday is known for big sales and discounts, marking the start of the holiday shopping season and drawing many shoppers to stores.
How long is Black Friday?
Black Friday typically lasts longer than just the Friday after Thanksgiving. While the main event is on that Friday, the sales often start early and extend well beyond it.
Retailers now roll out “Black Friday Week” deals, some even starting the Monday before Black Friday and lasting through the weekend.
Including pre-Black Friday promotions and early access deals, Black Friday can stretch up to two weeks or more.
Some brands begin with exclusive early-bird offers a week or two before the actual Black Friday.
Then, Cyber Monday swoops in with its own discounts. You might even see extended promotions running all the way through to the following week as brands try to maximize the shopping frenzy.
So, if you’re planning your eCommerce strategy, think of Black Friday as more of a “season” than a single-day event!
